Biz!!!! That last paragraph pulled on my heart strings. I miss witnessing the greatness of Biz sm - and cannot WAIT to read more of this. Also, what about American expats in London.... a style bubble in their own right imo... sending lots of love!!
That's the power of amulets…that little friend is protecting you from stupid commenters…
Seriously, though, I really enjoyed your essay. I like the way you tied the interview with the young women about their fashion choices with the anecdote about the aura reading. Good fashion is always about effective layering, right?!
He wants you to be here actually!!! And thank you so much. It was a very amber is the color of her energy few weeks for me. An aura anecdote that didn't make the cut of this report (too gratuitous, but for you I'll tell it): after my aura reading I went to a comedy club where a friend works. It was pretty dead so the comics had slim pickins for crowd work and I was selected to be worked.... the work in question was the comic talking about my AURA! I couldn't believe it....
This was such a wonderful piece. I saw a snippet from this on Rian Phin's story & it really captured my interest. (I just made this account actually to give it a like & now I'm commenting) "Clothing does not feel spiritual right now..." It really doesn't.
I've been thinking about my life & spirituality recently. Like, how there are sort of three centers/cores of life in my view: the material, emotional, & the spiritual. They're all interrelated and everything. It all hinges on the material, but the material's primary or sole (not too sure on which) purpose is to serve as the container. Emotions fill and characterize the container, and I'd say they serve as the interface between the material, or maybe the conduit of it, and the spiritual. I don't
have a way to describe the spiritual yet, but I just call it "immaterial". I've sorta been thinking about this on an off, but this is the first I've written on it. I just like ways to think about things, and I feel like I've been neglecting my spirit.
Anyway..Religion is the conventional way to allow it into your life by having these formal practices provided by the respective doctrine, and I feel like the overall decline in religion plays a part in this someway, somehow. I don't really subscribe to any religion, and I'd ideally like to discover/create my own spiritual ideas. There's always been a performance of material, but so I feel like it's really high right now with the temu hauls, SheIn hauls, Amazon haul hauls? Ughh, so much stuff. Thank you for writing this. Things like this always make me think!
Omg thank you so much for making an account to like and comment! You’re awesome… I love what you’ve shared. I think this is something people are waking up to, the idea that your material/emotional/spiritual selves are connected. I just thought of this when I was reading your comment, a big part of this discovery (at least online) seems to be through food? I.e., people changing their diets to be very grassfed beef, raw milk, no seed oils… it’s easy to make fun of some of the extreme side of that behavior but I def think people are wanting foods that seem more spiritually raw, literally. But I feel like the material isn’t being considered through clothes as much yet….! Anyway, thanks so much for your thoughtful response XO
Fascinating, a Buddhist perspective (in fashion and generally) is so rare to read about!

Wonderful essay. The doll charm freaks me out a little bit, if I'm being honest.
